Literary Terms (Jan. 15)

Iambic Pentameter– used to describe the meter in a line of poetry. It is made up of five feet (sets of syllables). Each foot is constructed of one iamb. An iamb is a set of two syllables in the pattern of unstressed followed by stressed.

EX: This line has 5 feet, so it’s written in pentameter. And the stressing pattern is all iambs:

if YOU | would PUT | the KEY | inSIDE | the LOCK

da DUM | da DUM | da DUM | da DUM | da DUM

 

End Rhyme– when rhyme comes at the end of the line of poetry

Rhyming Couplet– two rhyming lines

Inverted Syntax– a reversal in the expected order of words

Archaic LanguageLanguage belonging to an earlier time and generally no longer used.

Meterthe rhythm established by a poem, and it is usually dependent not only on the number of syllables in a line but also on the way those syllables are accented. This rhythm is often described as a pattern of stressed and unstressed syllables.

Syntaxthe arrangement of words and phrases to create well-formed sentences in a language.
